Meet Mary Pettis

Mary Pettis from Taylors Falls, Minnesota

Mary and her husband Randy live along the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway in Minnesota. She is considered an expressive realist. She has been trained in classical methods of painting with a Russian influence. Mary studied with Hungarian painter Bela Petheo; Richard Lack, at Atelier Lack; and Daniel Graves, who later became the founder of the Florence Academy of Art. Since the 1990s, Mary has been juried into and won awards in national and international painting events and exhibitions from New York City to Scottsdale and Maui to Barcelona.

Her art has taken her to the far corners of the world: China, Russia, and much of Europe. She has exhibited widely, including the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, and collectors of her work reach across the globe.

In the 1990s, Jim Wilcox introduced her to the “wet-in-wet” plein air approach and she moved her studio outdoors. Over the years she continued her studies with various teachers including Zhang Wen Xin, Kevin MacPherson, Jove Wang, and James Shoop.  Designated in 2017 as an ARC Living Master™ by the Art Renewal Center, Mary is also a Signature Member of the American Impressionist Society and the American Society of Marine Artists.

She has participated in the Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational since its inception (2006) and is one of the most widely collected artists among our family of art enthusiasts. You’ll want to view her paintings and perhaps be one of the happy art collectors that buys one of her extraordinary paintings. Over the years some of her nocturnal paintings have been the most inspiring.

Maui Arts League is excited to offer two plein air painting workshops in conjunction with the February, 2018 Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational. Both professional artists excel at ‘teaching.’  It is one thing to be a great artist, and yet another to be a superior instructor. Our workshop teachers are selected from the group of MPAPI professional ‘visiting artists’. Leon Holmes from Australia and Morgan Samuel Price from Florida will share their painting knowledge and techniques with  workshop attendees. You won’t want to miss out.
