2018 Pre-Event Workshop with Leon Holmes

“The Effects of Light and Color”

‘Heading East’ by Leon Holmes – Australia 12″ x 16″

We are thrilled to announce Leon Holmes (plein air artist from Australia) as our guest plein air painting instructor for the pre-event workshop in 2018! His unique skill of capturing the light has made his paintings stand out among others and receive many awards. His painting, ‘Heading East’ received Best In Show at the 2017 Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational.

He is an award-winning Australian artist, lecturer and ambassador of plein air (open air) painting. “If you want to have life in your painting, you need to paint it from life,” he says. “To capture the true light, the true color, you need to be immersed in the scene, and to become part of it. That’s why I think it’s so important to paint en plein air (in the open air).”

Born and raised in Perth, Western Australia, Leon gained experience in a wide range of artistic fields, including as a printmaker, graphic designer, art director, illustrator and photographer, before taking the plunge and becoming a full-time artist.

Be among the few that will have the opportunity to experience painting ‘en plein air’ on Maui with him.  Visit his website to learn more about this talented charismatic Aussie.

Dates:  February 14, 15, 16
9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
(Meet Leon at optional gathering 5-6:30 p.m. Feb. 13, 2018)

Cost:  $400 plus tax and a processing fee

Maximum Students: 10
Open to artists with moderate to advanced skill levels

Location:  West Maui – Lahaina to Kapalua area

The three day workshop will focus on capturing light and understanding color to enhance your paintings giving a more vibrant glow and sense of depth.  Leon enjoys working one-on-one with students, to help correct and/or refine any obvious issues that might be holding one from progressing to the next level. This workshop is appropriate for artists desiring to gain a solid understanding of the most important fundamentals of painting “light.”  Each day will include a lecture and demonstration that illustrates the impact of light and color on your finished painting.

Day 1  Color temperature – what does it mean and how do we make use of it.
Day 2 How LIGHT affects the landscape – warm vs. cool light in highlights and shadows, flooded light vs silhouette and the different angles of the sun.
Day 3  How COLOR affects the landscape – fine tuning atmospheric color over a distance, how to handle grays and reflective color.

Students will be able to understand what impact light and colors have when creating their paintings.  Learning how to differentiate light during different times of day and capturing this on canvas will encourage artists to take on the challenge of a scene that yesterday may have seemed too difficult.  Envision painting an image like Leon’s painting shown above.

Maui Arts League is excited to offer two plein air painting workshops in conjunction with the February, 2018 Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational. Both professional artists excel at ‘teaching.’  It is one thing to be a great artist, and yet another to be a superior instructor. Our workshop teachers are selected from the group of MPAPI professional ‘visiting artists’. Leon Holmes from Australia and Morgan Samuel Price from Florida will share their painting knowledge and techniques with  workshop attendees. You won’t want to miss out.
