The event’s mission is to foster an appreciation for plein air (outdoor) painting for Maui visitors and residents while supporting art activities within our community.

Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational

This weeklong event highlights 26 professional plein air painters from throughout Hawaii and the US Mainland. The painters capture the images of Maui – its people, its beaches and ocean scenes, its majestic mountains and valleys, and its historical buildings.

The event will be celebrating its 12th year. During the first 11 years, the event sold $1.2M+ in artworks. This is commendable because it represents approximately $100,000 worth of sales in each week-long event. As a result, the event is gaining significant recognition as a ‘must attend’ art event.

2017 Participating Artists

Painter participation is by invitation only. Invitations are extended to established professional artists that excel in the category of plein air painting. An anonymous Selection Committee evaluates those interested and qualified to participate.

2017 Schedule of Events

The event takes place the week during Presidents’ Day. It starts Saturday before Presidents’ Day and concludes with the gala and art sale on Friday following Presidents’ Day.

In 2017 the MPAPI workshop is taking a different approach. This 4-day workshop is a 'dual-teaching' workshop lead by Jason Sacran and John P Lasater, IV. Our workshop teachers are selected from the group of professional 'visiting artists'. Classes are usually comprised of local Maui artists, workshop teacher referrals, and those wishing to take a class from someone that focuses on specific painting techniques that are of interest to them.
