The event’s mission is to foster an appreciation for plein air (outdoor) painting for Maui visitors and residents while supporting art activities within our community.

Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational

This weeklong event highlights 25 professional plein air painters from throughout Hawaii and the US Mainland.  The 2017 Invitational also included an artist from Australia and he will return in 2018.  The painters capture the images of Maui – its people, its beaches and ocean scenes, its majestic mountains and valleys, and its historical buildings.

The event will be celebrating its 13th year next February. During the first 12 years, the event sold $1.4m+ worth of paintings. This is commendable because it represents approximately $100,000+ worth of sales in each week-long event., which is significant for an island with a population of 25,000 on the West Side.  As a result, the event is gaining significant recognition as a ‘must attend’ art event both by local residents and visitors to our island.

2018 Participating Artists

Painter participation is by invitation only. Invitations are extended to established professional artists that excel in the category of plein air painting. An anonymous Selection Committee evaluates those interested and qualified to participate.

2018 ‘Art to Heart’ Gala & Art Sale

The event highlights the unveiling of 125 freshly created paintings. It is always exciting to view what the artists have created throughout their week on Maui. This is a ticketed event and includes a 3-course dining experience; champagne reception with elegant appetizers, a sit down main course dinner and dessert.

Last year the pastry chef created a unique chocolate and berry ‘palette’ dessert that was the hit of the dinner. This year’s gala will be from 6 – 9 pm at the Royal Lahaina Resort Ballroom. Tickets will be available for purchase closer to the event.

Workshop

Maui Arts League is excited to offer two plein air painting workshops in conjunction with the February, 2018 Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational. Both professional artists excel at ‘teaching.’  It is one thing to be a great artist, and yet another to be a superior instructor. Our workshop teachers are selected from the group of MPAPI professional ‘visiting artists’. Leon Holmes from Australia and Morgan Samuel Price from Florida will share their painting knowledge and techniques with  workshop attendees. You won’t want to miss out.
