Artists Participation Requirements

The Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational event is held on the West Side of Maui.  The artist roster is limited to 25 artists.  It is comprised of approximately 8 artists from Hawaii, 8 returning artists from previous years, and 8 new artists to the event with one extra slot available. The roster for 2018 has been finalized and participants listed on our website.

An Anonymous Selection Committee, comprised of two professional artists, two serious art collectors, review applicants’ event participation based on the following the criteria:

  • Active plein air painting artist with high-quality website reflecting plein air artworks, biography, and artist statement
  • Active participant in plein air events in the US and worldwide
  • Art educational credentials
  • Membership in art organizations (PAPA, LPAPA, OPA, AIS, etc.) and membership status (Signature Member, Master Artist, etc.)
  • Awards received
  • Gallery representation
  • Level of community support (How does the artist support their local community and the plein air community?)
  • Salebility (History of sales at MPAPI events or success at other Plein Air events)
  • Other criteria the Committee determines appropriate (ie: traveling with spouse/partner, special hosting requirements required, allergies, etc.)

Selection is competitive.  If, after reviewing the above criteria, you are interested in being considered for 2019, please submit your request to May-June of 2018.

MPAPI Committee

Maui Arts League is excited to offer two plein air painting workshops in conjunction with the February, 2018 Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational. Both professional artists excel at ‘teaching.’  It is one thing to be a great artist, and yet another to be a superior instructor. Our workshop teachers are selected from the group of MPAPI professional ‘visiting artists’. Leon Holmes from Australia and Morgan Samuel Price from Florida will share their painting knowledge and techniques with  workshop attendees. You won’t want to miss out.
