2018 Post-Event Workshop with Morgan Samuel Price

“Palms in Dappled Light with its Many Moods of Green”

‘The Yellow Door’ by Morgan Samuel Price 8″ x 10″

We are honored to welcome Morgan back to Maui, as a participant in the Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational, and as our 2018 Post-Event Workshop instructor. Morgan Samuel Price is an acclaimed artist having received numerous awards for her paintings as well as accolades for her approach to teaching others to paint with an eye towards perfection.

At age 15, Morgan knew enough about painting to learn Sumi brush strokes. Even at 15, Morgan had the mindfulness to view her own practice and go learn specific skills to improve. No technical issue was going to hold Morgan back. Now, decades later, Morgan Samuel Price has technical skills few painters ever possess. Morgan will tell you that you make 22 decisions with each brushstroke and she can name them. You only develop technical skills like this with a very fine mind and the tenacity to use it.

In her own words, she shared that many years ago, a most gifted artist, Loran Wilford, said to her, “You will become your own teacher”. This simple yet prophetic statement became a fact in my career. I feel very fortunate that early in my life I realized this study would keep me focused as I pursued this multifaceted demanding passion. Being receptive is an asset. Lucky me, I found my passion early.”  Visit her website to learn more about this special and talented lady.

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW:

Morgan will focus on instructing artists on how to create the beauty they are observing in plein air.  Painting outside adds another layer of observation due to the atmosphere that the studio artist does not need to consider. The color Green with it’s many challenges will be demonstrated each day. The attending artists will add a variety of greens to your painting vocabulary.  Topics covered are:

Day 1 Palms and Their Unique Qualities in Nature
Day 2 The Many Moods of the Color Green
Day 3 Dappled Light in a Closed Landscape

Mornings are devoted to lecture/demonstration on the day’s topic. During the demonstration all academic principles will be addressed along with the topic with emphasis on: value & color mixing, composition, design, drawing, perspective and the mechanics.

A three hour painting period is set aside each day for the participating artists to paint. Artists will select their choice of scene and subject at their comfort level. Morgan will visit each artist, at their easel, during the afternoon painting sessions.

Group Critique follows each day’s painting session. The critique becomes another information moment for all the artists.

We encourage you to review one of Morgan’s workshop student’s, Joan Vienot, journal from attending one of her workshops.  It is a great synopsis of Morgan’s curriculum, her approach to helping her students, and the results one can expect from attending  one of her workshops.

Workshop

Maui Arts League is excited to offer two plein air painting workshops in conjunction with the February, 2018 Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational. Both professional artists excel at ‘teaching.’  It is one thing to be a great artist, and yet another to be a superior instructor. Our workshop teachers are selected from the group of MPAPI professional ‘visiting artists’. Leon Holmes from Australia and Morgan Samuel Price from Florida will share their painting knowledge and techniques with  workshop attendees. You won’t want to miss out.
