The 2018 Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational Best in Show Award was presented to Jennifer Diehl for her painting, ‘Island Eats.’ Scroll down to see images of all the award winning paintings.

The 2018 MPAPI event was fun for those interested in viewing and purchasing original paintings. Three paint outs, six art sales, and many opportunities for mingling with the artists made for a full 9-day art experience schedule. Five Hawaii artists, 15 returning artists from previous years, and 5 new artists to the event kept the art exhibits throughout the 9 days ‘new and fresh.’

The event culminated with the:

  • Art to Heart Gala & Art Sale sponsored by the Royal Lahaina Resort
  • Artists’ Aloha Reception & Art Sale sponsored by One Main Plaza (Lynn & Jim Foster & John Saunders – owners)
  • Artists’ Mahalo Gathering & Art Sale, sponsored by Mary Anne Fitch and Na Le Viet realtors with Hawai’i Life – Christie’s.

Sixteen awards were given that depicted the quality, variety of subjects, and artistic styles of the artists. The event judge, Jean Stern, and the event’s top tier sponsors all indicated this was the most challenging year to select that ONE painting that earned the honor of selection.  Seems to be the case each year, but the body of work this year was truly outstanding.

Mahalo to all the artists for producing their best works to share with Maui residents and Maui visitors.

The Best in Show (BIS) award winner, Jennifer Diehl, received a $1000 cash award from Maui Arts League. In addition, the BIS winner receives a full page ad in Southwest Art magazine. Please see all of our sponsors and links to their websites here on our website.

Ronaldo Macedo received the Irvine Museum Award along with a quarter page ad in Plein Air Magazine. Michael Clements,  Suzie Baker, and Scott W Prior received the UCI MICA Honorable Mentions.

The Artists’ Choice Award went to Jim McVicker. The Collectors’ Choice Award went to Patrick Saunders. A full listing of award winners is printed below.

Congratulations to the award winners and to all the artists for their inspiring entries. Our continued thanks to the judge, Jean Stern, Associate Director, of the University of California Irvine Museum and Institute of California Art, who has been with us for 13 years.

Workshop

Maui Arts League is excited to offer two plein air painting workshops in conjunction with the February, 2018 Maui Plein Air Painting Invitational. Both professional artists excel at ‘teaching.’  It is one thing to be a great artist, and yet another to be a superior instructor. Our workshop teachers are selected from the group of MPAPI professional ‘visiting artists’. Leon Holmes from Australia and Morgan Samuel Price from Florida will share their painting knowledge and techniques with  workshop attendees. You won’t want to miss out.
